Gutters: The Cheapest Way to Protect Your Most Expensive Investment
Gutters are easy to ignore. They're just strips of metal hanging off the edge of the roof, and when they're working, you don't notice them at all. But that unassuming little system is doing something critical: moving thousands of gallons of water a year away from the one part of your home you really don't want water near... the foundation.
When gutters fail, the damage rarely stays at the roofline. It shows up as a wet basement, a cracked foundation, ruined landscaping, or rotted trim. Here's what every homeowner in our climate should understand about them.
Why gutters matter more than they look like they should
A single inch of rain on an average roof sheds hundreds of gallons of water. Without gutters, all of that dumps straight down along the base of your house, where it does real damage over time:
Foundation trouble. Water pooling against the foundation seeps into the soil, expands and contracts with freeze-thaw cycles, and puts pressure on the walls. That's how you get cracks, bowing, and basement leaks.
Erosion and settling. Uncontrolled runoff washes out the soil around and under the house, which can lead to uneven settling.
Rot and staining. Water splashing back onto siding, trim, and fascia leads to peeling paint, rot, and mold.
Basement moisture. Much of the water that ends up in a basement or crawlspace got there because it wasn't directed away from the house up top.
Good gutters intercept that water and route it, through downspouts, to a safe discharge point well away from the foundation. It's one of the lowest-cost systems on the house and one of the highest-value.
Slope and sizing: the details that make or break performance
Two things determine whether a gutter actually works, and both are easy to get wrong.
Slope. Gutters need to pitch gently toward the downspouts, roughly a quarter inch of drop for every 10 feet of run is a common target. Too little slope and water sits and stagnates; too much and it overshoots. A perfectly level gutter is a puddle waiting to happen.
Sizing and downspout placement. Standard residential gutters are 5 inches, but larger roofs or steep pitches that shed water fast may need 6-inch gutters to keep up. Just as important is having enough downspouts. A long gutter run feeding a single downspout will overflow in a heavy rain no matter how clean it is.
The problems we see most often
When inspecting homes around the Capital District, a handful of gutter issues come up again and again:
Clogs. Leaves, pine needles, and shingle grit build up and turn the gutter into a trough that overflows over the front edge, often right down the siding.
Sagging and pulling away. Overloaded or poorly fastened gutters sag, which ruins the slope and can tear the fascia. Standing water and ice make it worse.
Improper or reversed slope. Water pools instead of draining, accelerating rust and rot.
Downspouts that dump too close. Extensions that are missing, too short, or draining right at the foundation defeat the whole purpose. You want water discharged several feet from the house.
Ice dams and winter overflow. In our winters, gutters packed with ice add weight, block drainage, and contribute to water backing up under the shingles. Gutters don't cause ice dams (that's an attic ventilation and insulation issue) but a clogged gutter makes the resulting mess worse.
Leaky seams and rusted sections. Joints and corners are the usual failure points on older gutters.
Maintenance that actually prevents damage
Gutters are one of the few home systems where a little routine attention genuinely pays off:
Clean them at least twice a year (spring and fall) and more often if you have overhanging trees. Fall cleanup after the leaves drop is non-negotiable here.
Check the flow. Run a hose through them and watch that water reaches the downspouts and exits freely at the bottom.
Look for sag and separation. Refasten loose hangers before a section pulls away entirely.
Verify the discharge point. Make sure downspout extensions carry water well clear of the foundation, not into a low spot beside it.
Inspect after storms. High winds and heavy snow loads are hard on gutters.
A note on gutter guards
Guards and screens can cut down on cleaning, and in a heavily wooded lot they're often worth it. But they're not maintenance-free, fine debris and pollen still accumulate, some designs shed water in heavy downpours, and a poorly chosen guard can trap material where you can no longer see or reach it. If you go this route, choose the type carefully for your roof and tree situation, and know that "guard" means less cleaning, not none.
The bottom line
Gutters protect the single most expensive component of your home, the foundation, for a tiny fraction of what foundation repairs cost. Keep them clean, keep them sloped, and keep the water discharging away from the house, and they'll quietly do their job for decades.
